Born in Seoul, raised in South Jersey and shaped by the Philadelphia area, inSu’s cultural perspective does not fit neatly into one box, and it should not be forced into one. His relationship to Asian-American identity exists alongside a life shaped by pop, R&B, hip-hop, fashion and the communities and environments in which he came of age.
The opportunity is not to attach culture to the artist as a marketing layer. It is to allow that lived intersection to become increasingly visible through the music, storytelling, style and world around him. Long term, inSu has the potential to contribute to a broader understanding of what an Asian-American artist can sound like, look like and represent within mainstream music without being confined by the category itself.
